Every day artist Rosa Loy rides her bicycle 10 kilometers through Leipzig from her home to the studio she has kept since 1994. “My mind clears of everything I’ve been thinking of at home,” she said during a recent conversation. “I go into the studio, have a tea, start to paint, and see what’s coming in. I wait for a tingling feeling like someone is watching me from behind. That’s where my ideas come from.”

Rosa Loy and Neo Rauch appear to move in a not dissimilar cosmos of imagery and painterly intentions. The difficulty of a coherent interpretation is characteristic of both artistic work. The joining of various content, oddly realistic elements on the part of a fragmented at the same time, but also narratively structured by image inventory is perhaps paradoxically designate as highly calculated Surrealism.

In “Empire of the Senseless” the world is populated by new age humanoids, and punctuated by random violence; punky kids are terrorists, secret agencies viciously plot, and ethnic groups
are displaced. When reading American author Kathy Acker’s 1988 apocalyptic novel, some plots don’t seem like fiction anymore.
As with the anesthetized emotions of Acker’s new age humanoids, it seems that emotions of individuals in 2014 have equally fallen silent.
Our exposure to an endless stream of violent news has made us equally resilient to emotion.Prone to processing the world mechanically, the individual today becomes submerged in the mass. In his influential book “The Revolt of the Masses” by Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset, written in 1929, he describes the phenomena of the mass: “To be different is to be indecent. The mass crushes beneath it everything that is different, everything that is excellent, individual, qualified and select. Anybody who is not like everybody, who does not think like everybody, runs the risk of being eliminated.” These words find expression in our society close to a century later.
In the exhibition “Empire of the Senseless”, Friedman Benda invites five painters, all of them women, to react to the world around us and to show us their reaction to the world we live in.The works that we will compile will illustrate each artists’ quest for conceptual and empriric realitiy amidst their own unique exploration of identitiy through art.

The Valkyrie landed at André Schlechtriem Gallery on a recent Saturday evening to bear a new star, Rosa Loy, into the firmament: Rachel Feinstein, riding her hot new show at Boesky; Lisa Yuskavage, who penned Rosa’s catalogue essay; Pattie Cronin, just awarded a Tiffany grant; Jane Kaplowitz, who hosted the after-party; and Deborah Kass, gleefully clutching a photo of her iconic creation Double Yentl, autographed that afternoon by both Hillary and Chelsea Clinton at a Sheraton Hotel fundraiser in midtown.

Still, they bear an undue resemblance to those of the best-known artist of the Leipzig group, Neo Rauch, who happens to be her husband and studiomate. The similarities include stylized quasi-illustrational figures, retro fashions, disorienting settings and rich, complementary color schemes.
